Save Our Post Offices

The Daily Mail led national coverage in the fight to protect local Post Offices in Britain with its Save Our Local Post Offices campaign.

Through dozens of front pages and investigations it pushed the Post Office, Government, and banks to take action to protect local branches. The paper championed the role played by postmasters in local communities and the vital services they provide.

The campaign's most significant victory was the £58 million settlement won by a group of postmasters after a two-decade fight for justice. The postmasters were accused of stealing from the till but the 'missing' money was due to a glitch with the IT system. The Mail increased its coverage in the months before the Post Office apologised.

The campaign also fought for Post Offices to be given funding, after 2,500 branches said they could shut due to financial hardship. The paper's coverage pushed Government and the Post Office to increase the amount it pays postmasters by up to £3,200 per Post Office.

After 13 consecutive days of coverage, Barclays performed a u-turn on its decision to ban customers from withdrawing cash from their local Post Office.
