Great British Spring Clean

The Daily Mail's Great British Spring Clean environmental campaign saw more than 550,000 volunteers nationwide sign up for 17,000 litter picks over the course of a month - including 175,000 schoolchildren.

The Spring Clean was the result of over a decade of campaigning by the Mail against single-use plastic which was instrumental in bringing in the policy of charging for supermarket plastic bags and helped provoke a nationwide attitude-change towards throwaway culture.

The campaign was supported by features championing those who have found alternatives to single-use plastic, educational pieces tackling issues including recycling and smarter shopping; alongside hard-hitting investigations into fly tipping, littering on motorways and "fatburgs" made from wet wipes.

The Mail also took manufacturers and supermarkets to task, highlighting those who were slow to address the problems of littering and single-use plastic.

The campaign had an astonishing effect. In total, nearly 240,000 wheelie bins of rubbish were picked up and 2,000 miles of river and canal were cleaned.
