Making a Difference

Broadwater Farm

In June, journalist Sharon Hendry visited Broadwater Farm in Tottenham, London to write about the estate and uncovered children so poor they dreaded the holidays because they went hungry and were cooped up in dilapidated flats.

The editor of the Sunday Times Magazine decided to include an appeal for funds to help the children at the end of the article to help take the children to the seaside and ensure they had one square meal each day. Within a fortnight, readers had pledged £350,000 for the children of Broadwater Farm.

A 10-year-old from the estate who went on a camping trip enabled by the donations said: “I feel like I’m on a five-star holiday. The bed is perfect. The food is perfect. Everything is perfect.”

Hendry also visited Blackpool to launch the Sunday Times Christmas appeal in the magazine. Her reporting activated an outpouring of generosity in the readers, raising £1.1 million.
